How Many Pumpkins Do I Need for My Front Porch?

Short answer: 15–20 for a townhome stoop, 30–45 for a standard suburban entry, and 70–110 for a double-door estate portico. The count matters less than the mix — a display built from three sizes and three tones looks fuller than twice as many identical pumpkins.

The rule that matters more than the count

Your largest pumpkin should be roughly a quarter of the width of your front door. On a standard 36-inch door that is a pumpkin about nine inches across at its widest — usually 25 to 35 pounds. On a double-door entry it means a 40-pound-plus anchor on each side. Almost every under-whelming porch we are called to rescue has the right number of pumpkins and no anchor.

Split the count across three sizes

Anchors (2–4). Set the scale. Placed at the base of the door and the foot of the steps.

Mid-size (25–35% of the count). Bridge the gap between anchors and filler, and carry most of the colour.

Small, minis and gourds (up to half). Hide edges, fill transitions and soften the base. Cheap to buy, and the reason a display looks finished rather than placed.

How many pumpkins do I need for my front porch?

A townhome stoop reads well with 15–20 pumpkins, a standard suburban entry with 30–45, a wide entry with three or more steps with 45–70, and a double-door estate entry with 70 to 110. Variation in size and tone matters more than raw count.

How many large pumpkins should a display have?

At least two, and the largest should be roughly a quarter of your door's width. Under-scaling the anchor pumpkin is the single most common mistake — it makes the whole display disappear from the curb no matter how many small pumpkins surround it.

Is it better to have more pumpkins or bigger pumpkins?

Bigger, up to a point. Two oversized anchors do more visual work than thirty minis scattered across a landing. Minis are filler that hides edges and transitions; they cannot carry a display on their own.

How many mini pumpkins do I need?

Plan on roughly a third to a half of your total count as minis and ornamental gourds. They fill the gaps between larger pumpkins, cover hay bale edges and soften the base of the display.
