Pumpkin Porch Decor — Six Styles That Actually Suit a House

Most pumpkin porch decor fails for one of three reasons: the palette fights the brick, the largest pumpkin is too small for the door, or every pumpkin is the same size and tone. Fix those and almost any style works.

Below are the six directions we build most often, with the palette each one uses and the kind of elevation it suits. Every image is one of our own installations.

Neutral heirloom pumpkin porch decor in bone and pale green tones at a Houston-area entry

Style 01

Heirloom Neutral

Palette:
Bone, blush, dusty green, pale grey
Suits:
White brick, painted brick, light limestone

The most requested look and the hardest to buy off a pallet, because it depends on heirloom varieties — Silver Moon, Porcelain Doll, Jarrahdale — rather than field orange. Neutral displays read as architecture instead of decoration, which is why they photograph so well against pale masonry.

Classic orange and cream pumpkin porch decor on a red brick Houston entry

Style 02

Classic Harvest

Palette:
True orange, cream, deep terracotta
Suits:
Red and brown brick, traditional elevations

The traditional treatment, done at proper scale. The failure mode is uniform orange against red brick — the display disappears. Break it with cream and white at the base of the door and one near-black Jarrahdale as a visual full stop.

Moody pumpkin porch decor with white and heirloom pumpkins beside a navy front door

Style 03

Moody Contrast

Palette:
Near-black Jarrahdale, deep green, ivory
Suits:
Navy, black or charcoal front doors

A dark door swallows a dark display. The trick is to keep the darkest pumpkins low and away from the door, and to push ivory and white varieties up against the paint so the entry frames itself.

Pumpkins cascading down one side of stone front steps at a Houston home

Style 04

Layered Stair Cascade

Palette:
Any — this one is about structure
Suits:
Homes with three or more front steps

Rather than lining pumpkins along each tread, the display flows down one side of the staircase and spills at the base. It gives the entry a diagonal, which is what makes a porch look styled rather than stocked.

Symmetrical oversized pumpkin display flanking a stone estate double-door entry

Style 05

Double-Door Symmetry

Palette:
Cream and orange with oversized anchors
Suits:
Estate entries, double doors, tall porticos

Large entries need weight, not quantity. Two oversized anchor pumpkins — forty pounds or more each — do more than fifty minis scattered across the landing. Hay bales lift the mid-layer so the display fills vertical space.

Soft white and sage pumpkin porch decor on a small white brick entry

Style 06

Soft Cottage

Palette:
White, pale peach, sage, mini gourds
Suits:
Small stoops, townhomes, cottage porches

Small entries look best when the display stays low and dense rather than tall and sparse. Cluster whites and mini gourds tightly around a single mid-size pumpkin so the stoop reads as full at the scale it actually has.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best pumpkin porch decor for a small porch?
Keep it low and dense. On a stoop or townhome entry, one mid-size anchor pumpkin surrounded by a tight cluster of whites and mini gourds reads fuller than a tall, spread-out arrangement. Fifteen to twenty pumpkins is usually enough.
What colors of pumpkins should I put on my porch?
Match the masonry, not the season. Red brick wants cream, bone and dusty green with orange as an accent. Light stone and stucco carry deeper terracotta well. White or painted brick handles the widest range, including near-black Jarrahdales and deep greens.
How do you make a pumpkin display look expensive?
Three things: variation in size, variation in tone, and correct scale to the door. Displays look cheap when every pumpkin is the same size and colour, or when the largest pumpkin is too small for the entry it sits beside.
Should pumpkin decor go on the steps or beside the door?
Weight the steps. Most people see your porch from the street or the driveway, and a display that cascades down one side of the stairs and anchors at the door reads from that distance. A display confined to the door landing does not.

Yes. Harvest & Hearth Porch Co. designs, delivers and installs pumpkin porch displays across The Woodlands, Spring, Tomball, Magnolia and Conroe. Packages run $350 to $1,550 with delivery, design and installation included.
