Pumpkin Varieties for Porch Displays — and Which Last Longest
A porch display is really a palette problem. The varieties below are the ones we build with, listed with their colour, working weight and how long each one realistically holds up on a Houston porch — where the enemy is heat and humidity, not frost.
| Variety | Look | Size | Lasts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jarrahdale | Slate blue-green, deeply ribbed, near-black in shade | 12–25 lb | Longest — 10+ weeks |
| Cinderella (Rouge Vif d'Étampes) | Flattened, deep terracotta orange | 15–35 lb | Long — 8–10 weeks |
| Porcelain Doll | Soft blush pink, lightly ribbed | 10–20 lb | Long — 8–10 weeks |
| Silver Moon / Casper (white) | Chalk white, smooth | 8–20 lb | Medium — 6–8 weeks; yellows in direct sun |
| Field / Howden orange | True orange, tall and round | 10–25 lb | Medium-long — 8 weeks |
| Fairytale (Musquée de Provence) | Bronze-tan, heavy ribbing | 15–30 lb | Longest — 10+ weeks |
| Knucklehead / warty | Bumpy orange or green | 8–15 lb | Long — 8–10 weeks |
| Mini pumpkins (Jack Be Little, Baby Boo) | Orange, white or striped, palm-sized | under 1 lb | Short — 4–6 weeks |
| Ornamental gourds | Green, cream, striped, irregular | under 2 lb | Longest — often 12 weeks |
How we use each one
- Jarrahdale
- The anchor for moody and neutral palettes. Thick-skinned, so it tolerates a west-facing entry.
- Cinderella (Rouge Vif d'Étampes)
- The classic anchor. Its flat shape stacks better than a field pumpkin, which is why it appears in almost every tiered display.
- Porcelain Doll
- Carries the blush note in a neutral palette without reading as novelty. Excellent against grey limestone.
- Silver Moon / Casper (white)
- The workhorse of neutral displays. Keep it under a porch roof; full afternoon sun turns white pumpkins cream then yellow.
- Field / Howden orange
- The traditional look. Used as mid-layer volume rather than the star, because the shape is uniform and reads flat in quantity.
- Fairytale (Musquée de Provence)
- Bridges orange and neutral palettes. The most sculptural variety at large scale.
- Knucklehead / warty
- Texture. One or two per display; more than that and the porch tips from styled to Halloween.
- Mini pumpkins (Jack Be Little, Baby Boo)
- Filler and edge cover. Plan on a third to half of your total count, and expect to replace a few by early November.
- Ornamental gourds
- The most heat-tolerant thing on the porch. Excellent at the base of hay bales and along stair treads.

Making them last in Houston
- Keep pumpkins off hot concrete — hay, wood or a mat underneath adds weeks.
- Dry them if sprinklers reach the porch; standing water is what starts soft spots.
- Never carve anything you want to keep past a week in this climate.
- Put the thick-skinned varieties where the afternoon sun lands, whites in the shade.
Frequently asked questions
- Which pumpkins last the longest on a porch?
- Thick-skinned heirlooms: Jarrahdale, Fairytale and Cinderella routinely hold 10 weeks or more on a shaded Houston porch. Ornamental gourds last longest of all. White heirlooms and mini pumpkins fade fastest, particularly in direct afternoon sun.
- What are the white pumpkins called?
- The large ones are usually Silver Moon, Casper or Polar Bear; the palm-sized ones are Baby Boo. All three yellow if left in direct sun, so they belong under a porch roof or on a shaded, east-facing entry.
- How many pumpkin varieties should a display use?
- Three to five. Fewer than three looks like a grocery pallet; more than five and the palette loses its logic. We typically build on one anchor variety, two mid-size varieties and a mini or gourd for filler.
- Do heirloom pumpkins cost more than regular pumpkins?
- Yes — heirloom and specialty varieties generally cost several times a field pumpkin of the same weight, and they are harder to source in quantity in the Houston area. That difference is most of the gap between a DIY porch and an installed one.
- Which pumpkins handle Houston heat best?
- Jarrahdale, Fairytale and ornamental gourds. We weight sun-exposed entries toward those and keep white heirlooms where the porch roof shades them, which is why the same package looks slightly different from house to house.
